The Golden Circle

I really enjoyed Simon Sinek TED talk on the Golden Circle it made me think more about the "why" in my teaching. Why do I believe collaboration and co-constructing are so important for my students? I believe it helps them discover their own interests and become more understanding of others. Exposing them to an environment where their input matters will fuel their drive to continue to learn and continue to keep going with an idea. I teach 6th graders, adolescence, they are still trying to figure out who they are. If setting them up in a structure where they are free to share and obtain ideas can help them be more confident in who they are or at least a foundation to do so.

Sinek's examples of inspired leaders, organizations, and pioneers were all fueled by the why they are doing it. Dr. King, Apple, and the Wright brothers were doing what they believe because that was their drive.  Their goal was to continue to make improvements. I would like this want for my students, to continue to improve on themselves.
Creating a value proposition with the Golden Circle Model

Sinek Golden Circle diagram was so clear, why, how, and what. The "What" is the biggest circle on the outside because Sinek said we know what we do. I know I teach. The "why" is the smallest circle because is the purpose, the belief. I took this as the most important. Why do I teach? Why do we do what we do? The "why" is what drives us to keep going and improving. I like that it is represented a small circle because you are narrowing down exactly your belief is. It's what we are doing with our final projects like Dr. Bogad said in class yesterday it might not be this perfect complete thing. If we are working on our why then we will continue to build upon those improvements and keep working at it.

  1. Julie,

I think everything comes back to our why. Its what makes great teachers! Great post.

  2. I really liked the image that Sinek used as well, Julie. I also liked how he connected it to the parts of the brain, so interesting! This also made me think about my "why" and I agree with you when you say this is what drives us to keep going and improving...so true! If we didn't have a "why" we would just keep doing what we do years prior and never think about change.

  3. I hope this idea will stay with you and guide you just as it is doing for your project ideas!
