School in the "Cloud".

Sugata Mitra brings up an interesting point in his Ted talk since we don't know what the future jobs are how are we preparing our students. It made me almost stop in my tracks. He's right we don't really know what jobs may look like but we do know technology is always advancing.

I thought his "Hole in the wall project" was cool. Place the computer in the wall and let the children discover on their own. It took a lot of time but it was possible. This object in the wall was so intriguing that it gave them the drive to return the next and the next day. The idea of knowing being obsolete was almost scary but I confused it with learning. Learning could never be obsolete. There will always opportunities to do that. It may not look the same to everyone and it is always changing, learning does happen.

I feel my role is very similar to Mitra describes will Self Organized Learning Environments (SOLE). At the begging of the school year, I would say Collaboration and encouragement is what anyone would see in my classroom. At the end of the year, after completing my first dive in distant learning, I would say the addition of broadband (being connected digitally) and admiration (admiring what my students do independently as well as together is what my classroom environment is starting to look like. It's truly amazing what learners can do in the right environment. I like when he discussing his wish about designing the future of learning, the school in the cloud, in a way many us took a stab at this from our homes with distant learning. The ideas are not complete but we will continue to learn from our students to support them the best way we can.

  1. I don't know why I had not made the connection to our Spring 2020 model of online learning, but it is so obviously relevant to what Mitra is asking us to think about here. Did it work? What did we miss that he tries to caution us about? HOw would he tell us to do it better? YOu have me thinking!!

  2. Hi Julie, I love the graphic! That was a great find! I enjoyed reading your post. Yes, we did take a deep dive into distance learning. Now that us teachers have all used the tools and have explored the possibilities in a real context, we can only get better at using them for teaching and learning.

  3. HI Julie- I completely agree with you that it is amazing what students can do when in the right environment- regardless of where that is! I also love the graphic you added on Mitra!
